In an attempt to increase the number of tourists that visit the country every year, Tahilands government has announced the construction of the first five legal casinos. Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said in a statement that last year 13 million tourists chose Thailand as their holiday destination and the government intends to attract a bigger number through gambling.
Thai citizens who wish to gamble will be able to do so and in this way the Police will focus on other matters instead of fighting against illegal gambling, Samak explained. The Prime Minister also said that all the money collected as entrance fees would be given to different charities that work in the country.
Up until now, casinos have been prohibited in Thailand, which forces Thai people, known for their fondness for gamble, to visit the casinos in Camboya, located near the shared border. Primer Minister Samak stressed that allowing casinos does not mean legalizing existing illegal gambling venues.
As to the location of the gaming centers, there are plans to build them on five of the most important tourist destinations in the country: Pattaya, Phuket, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai.
